What makes shoes vegan?
Vegan footwear are manufactured with no animal products with includes leather, suede, crocodile skin, sheepskin as well as silk. Faux leather is typically made from polymers affixed to a cotton backing, whilst synthetic suede is created using manufactured fibres. Beyond Skin vegan shoes and boots are made of durable Italian faux leather, microfibre suede made from recycled PET plastics, cream lacquered resin soles, recycled faux leather lining with a plant polymer coating, and a selection of vintage-inspired woven materials.
Are vegan shoes eco-friendly?
Most faux leather is composed of plastic and cotton, and while plastics are not environmentally ideal, the impact from vegan leather manufacturing is far smaller than the impact of pollution from leather tanning. Leather is tanned using potent chemicals in parts of the world that have minimal health and safety protections for workers, and little or no environmental protections. One of the chemicals commonly used for tanning called chromium is listed as one of the top ten worst global pollution issues. On the other hand textile technology is always advancing, with innovative fabrics comprised of recycled currently in development. Overall, we feel synthetic leather is a more eco-friendly choice to leather.
Why are vegan shoes so expensive?
Beyond Skin vegan shoes and boots are more expensive than high street brands because our shoes are produced in the EU by talented shoemakers who are protected by employment laws and health and safety regulations, avoiding the unsafe conditions and low wages that happens elsewhere in the fashion industry that usually permits prices to be so cheap. We also discovered that after oil, fashion is the biggest polluting industry, so we wanted to source only the best quality recycled synthetic materials for our shoes. As we’re striving to make shoes that tick all the boxes of not harming humans or small children, not harming the environment and not harming animals, this makes our vegan boots more expensive.
Can you polish vegan shoes?
Luckily you won't need to buy costly shoe polish for vegan shoes. As vegan leather is usually created using polyurethane plastic, all you need to do to take care of them is wipe your shoes with a damp cloth. Some fabric protectors are also suitable for microfibre suede (we recommend always checking the label on the fabric protector).
