What are vegan shoes?
Vegan-friendly shoes are manufactured without any animal materials with includes cow hide, suede, reptile skin, sheepskin and also silk. Pleather is typically made from polymers affixed to a cotton backing, whilst synthetic suede is created from manufactured microfibres. Beyond Skin vegan shoes and boots are manufactured using luxurious Italian vegan leather, 100% recycled vegan suede, cream lacquered resin soles, recycled faux leather lining with a plant polymer coating, and a selection of vintage-inspired woven materials.
Are vegan shoes eco-friendly?
The majority of vegan leather is made from plastic and cotton, and even though plastic is not without its environmental flaws, when compared to the environmental impact of leather tanning, we believe vegan leather manufacturing is the lesser of two evils. Animal hide is tanned using potent chemicals in countries with minimal health and safety regulations for workers, and poor environmental standards. One of the chemicals frequently used for tanning called chromium is listed as one of the top ten biggest global pollution problems. Whereas textile technology is always advancing, with trailblazing fabrics made from sustainable currently in development. Overall, we feel synthetic leather is a more environmentally-conscious alternative to leather.
Why are vegan shoes so expensive?
Beyond Skin vegan shoes are more expensive than high street brands because our footwear is made in Spain within the EU by talented shoemakers who are protected by employment laws and health and safety regulations, avoiding the unsafe conditions and low wages that occurs elsewhere in the footwear industry that often permits prices to be so cheap. We also became aware that fashion is the second biggest polluting industry after oil, so we wanted to find only the most durable recycled vegan materials for our footwear. As we’re trying to produce shoes that tick all the boxes of not harming humans or small children, not harming the environment and not harming animals, this makes our vegan boots more pricy.
Can you polish vegan shoes?
Thankfully you won't need to purchase pricey shoe polish for vegan footwear. As vegan leather is normally created using plastic, to take care of them, simply wipe your shoes with a damp cloth. Some fabric protectors are also suitable for microfibre suede (please do always check the label on the fabric protector).
